A selfless handyman's heroic act to save a child from a fire leaves him with severe burns, disfiguring his face and leading to a life of loneliness and isolation.

In 1898, a small American town is shaken by a devastating fire that leaves Monk Johnson, a handyman and close family friend, with a grotesquely disfigured face and brain injury. As the townspeople become increasingly superstitious and terrified of Monk, he becomes a pariah, forced to flee for his life.
