In 1930s Okayama, Kiroku navigates high school and his emerging sexuality while hiding his feelings for Michiko, the daughter of a Catholic family he boards with. He channels his energy into a gang, breaking rules and getting into fights, under the influence of a young tough named Terrapin. As they lead battles against rival gangs, Kiroku and Terrapin become aligned with the right-wing Kita Ikki, reflecting the attitudes of Japanese youth who supported imperialism leading to World War II.
