Jérôme Bonaparte, disguised as "Jerome Laverne," falls for Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson in Baltimore, marrying her despite his royal heritage. However, Napoleon disapproves of the union, annuls the marriage, and sends Elizabeth back to Baltimore.
