Napoleon's brother Jérôme falls deeply in love with Elizabeth Patterson, a wealthy American heiress, but their romance is threatened when Napoleon disapproves of their union and tries to tear them apart by arranging for Jérôme to marry another woman.

Jérôme Bonaparte, disguised as "Jerome Laverne," falls for Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson in Baltimore, marrying her despite his royal heritage. However, Napoleon disapproves of the union, annuls the marriage, and sends Elizabeth back to Baltimore. Jérôme later escapes his own arranged wedding and returns to Elizabeth, where they reunite after the birth of their son.
