Original footage of a thriving farming community in Glencoe, Minnesota, 60 miles west of Minneapolis, was captured in 1979 for a PBS documentary. However, the project was put on hold for six years as Malle worked on other projects. In 1985, he revisited the community and found it grappling with the challenges of overproduction in farm country, including weekly foreclosures and families relocating to the south.
