Tommy Linklater, an 18-year-old magician, is an amateur chess player who discovers his talent for the game after his mother's death. He moves to a small town with his father, a physicist, and becomes friends with a basketball player, a cheerleader, and two charming guys. Tommy's skills attract the attention of the captain of the chess team, who challenges him to a match. Despite losing, Tommy is approached by the captain to join an underground chess club, where he faces off against the top player and wins. When the Russian Junior Chess Team comes to town, Tommy is substituted in for the injured captain and helps the team win.
