In 1946, German prisoners of war are sent to a female transit camp in Leningrad, where they face hostility from the Russian female soldiers. However, Dr. Natalia and the cook show kindness to the prisoners. Natalia has a personal connection to the camp, as she has an agreement with Commander Pavlov to keep her former lover, who is slow and wounded, in the camp. As she works to uncover SS infiltrators among the prisoners, Natalia and one of the prisoners, Max, develop a romantic connection. Meanwhile, tensions rise as the prisoners are invited to play in a ball with the women who survived the war, and Natalia must navigate her feelings and loyalties amidst the chaos.
