Janggan background

Janggan

In this film, a young woman discovers the significance of kites in her Balinese ancestral heritage, a tradition that has been passed down for centuries.

The documentary follows a student as she discovers the ancient traditions of kite-making and kite-flying in Bali. She learns that these activities are a rite of passage for local youths, teaching them important communal and collective spirits. The student is aided by elderly kite masters, royal patrons, and two troupes, and experiences both the sacred rituals and the boisterous competitions. However, she also uncovers that these traditions are struggling to remain relevant in modern Bali, which has changed significantly since the days captured in old photographs.
