Rai Ito, struggling to find a regular job, becomes fascinated with an exhibition on the classic novel "The Tale of Genji". He relates to the story, feeling inferior to his younger brother who excels academically and physically. After his brother's medical school acceptance, Rai wanders and is transported back in time to the Heian period, where he introduces himself as Onmyoji Raimei Ito. He's hired by the emperor's wife, Nyogo Kokiden, who seeks to have her son become emperor, thanks to a headache pill he had with him.
