Willie Smith, a restless Londoner, flees his predetermined fate as a postal clerk by taking on odd jobs around the world. Currently, he's a tobacconist's assistant in Cape Town, earning £2/week and secretly aspiring to be a playwright. There, he meets Mary Blayne, the daughter of a British admiral, and they fall in love despite her engagement to a wealthy suitor back home. As their relationship deepens, a family friend and her parents conspire to break them up, forcing Willie and Mary to confront the societal pressures and expectations that threaten to tear them apart.
