After World War II, Susanne Wallner returns to Berlin to find a stranger, Dr. Hans Mertens, occupying her apartment. He's a war veteran struggling with depression and heavy drinking. As they cohabitate, they develop a strong bond and eventually fall in love, which brings Hans some solace. However, his life is turned upside down when he discovers that Ferdinand Brückner, his former captain who gave the order to massacre over 100 innocent people, including women and children, on Christmas 1942 in Poland, is also living in Berlin.
