In a daring escape, two men harness the power of a hot air balloon to defy communist East Germany and reunite with their loved ones in the West.

Two families in East Germany, the Strelzyks and the Wetzels, plan to escape to the West in 1978. Peter Strelzyk constructs a homemade air balloon to carry them across the heavily militarized border between East and West Germany.
