The story takes place on Anson Beach, New Hampshire, where a group of teenagers, survivors of the catastrophic A6 virus, have formed a community. They have a sinister nature, as they abduct and burn a man on a pyre, believing it will protect them from the virus. The main character, Bernie, reflects on the new world and daydreams about the past before the outbreak.
