Robert Draper, inventor of a range finder for anti-aircraft guns, is wrongly sentenced to death for murder and escapes from a police van during a blackout. With the help of telephone operator Mary Jones, he flees and seeks to clear his name by contacting John Ronnel, who can vouch for his character. However, their efforts are hampered by Marie Duval, the nightclub singer who testified against Draper, and her subsequent murder.
