In 1962 Calcutta, three families from an upper-middle-class neighborhood navigate love, family, and financial struggles. Gurcharan, a retired man, mortgages his palatial home to support his daughters' marriages, while his neighbor Navinchandra Roy offers his daughter Lalita a job to help the family survive. Lalita falls for Navin's son Shekhar, but Navin has other plans for him to marry a wealthy woman. Meanwhile, a wealthy businessman returns home and sets his eyes on Lalita, causing chaos in the families. With the threat of eviction looming, Lalita must find a way to save her family from destitution.
