Jimmy Haskell, a struggling music store owner, joins his uncle's health food business and sparks a feud with the McCorkle family, who run a boarding house and play in a band. When Jimmy's uncle, C.J., is impressed by a tomato thrown in a dispute, the McCorkles and the band take a liking to him. Jimmy falls for Molly McCorkle, but his plan to trick C.J. into taking a vacation backfires, leading to a radio show where the band plays to great success, with a promise of giving away $1,000 each week.
