Dr. Sam Frizzell lives with his 18-year-old daughter Ariel in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighborhood. Since his wife's death, Sam has focused on Ariel, treating her like a surrogate wife. Ariel, however, has developed an Electra complex and has behavioral issues due to her mother's death and Sam's treatment. She's home-schooled by a tutor, Markus, as she can't function in a school environment.
