Harry Angstrom, a former high school basketball star, abandons his job and family on a whim, leaving his wife Janice and son Nelson behind. He hops in his car with no plans, eventually ending up with a new woman, Ruth Leonard, a party girl. As Harry navigates his new life, he struggles to find a sense of normalcy and a loving relationship, constantly reacting to the world around him. Meanwhile, Janice's family's pastor, Reverend Jack Eccles, tries to persuade Harry to return to his family on his own accord.
