Retrace background

Retrace

Katherine, a Holocaust survivor since age seven, embarks on a journey to her ancestral homeland of Transylvania, Romania, accompanied by her family, and rediscovers joyful and terrifying memories from her forgotten past as she leaves Sweden behind.

A Swedish woman, who survived the Holocaust as a child, returns to her father's homeland of Transylvania, Romania with her family. The trip awakens both joyful and terrifying memories of her past, as well as the harsh reality of Ceausescu's communist regime. Meanwhile, her husband develops a romantic connection with her sister, adding to the emotional complexity of the story. The film weaves together two parallel narratives, one of the woman's childhood friend and love, Sandor, who works for the dictator as a forester, and his ultimately tragic fate. The film concludes with an unexpected and unusual convergence of the two storylines.
