A group of war prisoners, having toiled to build a bridge over the river Kwai in Thailand, face devastation when an American bomber destroys their work. In response, the camp commander orders executions, but just in time, new orders arrive, requiring the healthiest prisoners to be transported to Japan. As the prisoners plan their escape, the American bomber's pilot, Leyland Crawford, is rescued by the Meo, a resistance group led by British Colonel Grayson, who are fighting against the Japanese.
