Reporter Patsy Reynolds and photographer Eddie Porter are assigned to interview John Foster, head of the Emmerson Foundation, about a revolutionary listening device. However, Foster evades them, leading them to Professor Reynolds, the device's true inventor. As they delve deeper, they become entangled in a complex web of shootings, stolen blueprints, and mysterious corpses, ultimately losing their jobs and being pursued by those who believe they are either killers or targets.
