A lowly 17th-century Japanese peasant, Masa, is suddenly immersed in the brutal and unforgiving society of the Samurai, forcing him to confront the dark and sinister realities of their warrior way of life.

The Samurai, celebrated for their exceptional skill and loyalty, are revealed to have a dark side of greed, treachery, and violence. Based on newly discovered war manuals, the story follows a young peasant farmer, Masa, who rises through the ranks from foot soldier to commander, only to be betrayed and forced to commit suicide by his fellow Samurai.
