In 16th century Florence, Michelangelo Buonarroti, a widely acclaimed genius, struggles to complete the Sistine Chapel ceiling while facing poverty and exhaustion. When Pope Julius II dies, Michelangelo becomes fixated on finding the finest marble to finish his tomb. However, his loyalty is tested when Pope Leo X, a rival Medici family member, commissions him to design the San Lorenzo basilica façade. As Michelangelo lies to maintain favor with both families, he becomes increasingly tormented by suspicion and hallucinations, leading him to question his moral and artistic values.
