Summer 1910, several tourists vanish on the Channel Coast, prompting inspectors Machin and Malfoy to investigate Slack Bay, where the Slack river meets the sea at high tide. The community of fishermen and oyster farmers lives in harmony, with the Bréfort family, known for their ferry business, at its center. The family's patriarch, nicknamed "The Eternal", struggles to keep his mischievous sons in line, particularly 18-year-old Ma Loute. The Van Peteghems, a decadent and inbred family, spend their summers in their mansion overlooking the bay, mingling with the locals. Over five days, a peculiar love story unfolds between Ma Loute and Billie Van Peteghem, confusing and mystifying both families and threatening their way of life.
