In 1912, Russian aristocrat Fedor Petroff, the examining magistrate in the summer resort of Chienova, falls in love with peasant Olga Urbenin, who is engaged to another man. Nadena, Petroff's fiancée, witnesses their encounter and ends their engagement. However, Petroff soon discovers that Olga is having an affair with his friend Volsky, cheating on both her husband and him. When Olga reveals her plans to marry Volsky, a tragic event unfolds.
