Tamango background

Tamango

A perilous journey to Cuba is disrupted by a sudden uprising, as a newly enslaved African, Tamango, takes the captain's mistress hostage, leading to a dramatic and intense confrontation.

In the 1800s, a Dutch slave ship captain, John Reinke, is transporting a cargo of slaves from Africa to Cuba. His mistress and servant-slave, Aiche, is on board, and the ship's doctor, Corot, has romantic intentions towards her. As the slaves, led by Tamango, plot a revolt, Corot convinces Aiche that Reinke never intends to marry her or set her free. Aiche joins the revolt, but when it reaches a stalemate, Reinke orders a cannon fired into the hold, where the slaves are barricaded with stolen arms.
