An exploratory ship, the USS Palomino, discovers a black hole with a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, just outside its event horizon. The Palomino's crew, including Captain Dan Holland, Lieutenant Charlie Pizer, journalist Harry Booth, scientist Dr. Kate McCrae, Dr. Alex Durant, and the robot V.I.N.CENT, attempt to solve the mystery of the Cygnus. As they investigate, they find themselves in a gravity-free zone, unaware it's artificial, and must escape before being pulled into the black hole.
