In Los Angeles, Norah Larkin, a telephone operator, celebrates her birthday alone, reading a letter from her fiancé who plans to marry an Army nurse in Japan. Upset, she accepts a blind date with photographer Harry Prebble. After drinking six strong cocktails, Norah becomes drunk and Harry tries to force her into sex, but she fights back with a fireplace poker. The next morning, she wakes up with no memory of the night, only to find Harry's dead body and the police investigating, with her belongings at the crime scene.
