At Shermer High School in Illinois, five students from different cliques are forced to spend a Saturday detention together. Claire, the popular princess, Andrew, the star athlete, John, the rebellious delinquent, Brian, the brainy outcast, and Allison, the quirky misfit, have little in common. Under the supervision of Richard Vernon, they are tasked with writing a 1,000-word essay about themselves. As they navigate their differences and challenges during the nine-hour detention, they may discover new aspects of themselves and each other.
