In the 1990s, a shy college graduate from Wisconsin spends the summer in Manhattan with his openly gay cousin, who is grieving the loss of his lover to AIDS. When Toby wears his cousin's shoes, he experiences powerful visions of the 1970s and gains confidence to explore his own sexuality, leading to a romantic encounter with a man.
