In 1992 Los Angeles, a young entrepreneur named Joanne Beck faces sexism in the workplace, leading her to volunteer at a help center in South Central. There, she meets Jay Hunter, a former gang member trying to turn his life around after a stint in prison. Despite their differences, they form an unlikely partnership that gains national recognition in the fight against racial injustice, experiencing love, tragedy, and racism along the way.
