Life on the Paridier farm is drastically different since the men went off to fight in World War I. With Hortense Sandrail taking charge, she bravely shoulders the workload, aided by her daughter Solange. When harvest time arrives, she decides to hire a farmhand, but it's too late, and no men are available. The mayor recommends Francine Riant, an orphan, who becomes the perfect solution. Francine is well-mannered, respectful, and a hard worker, making her a valuable addition to the farm. She forms a strong bond with Hortense and Solange, making the most of their situation. However, things take a romantic turn when Georges, Hortense's son, returns on leave and falls in love with Francine.
