Waring Hudsucker, the head of Hudsucker Industries, takes his own life, prompting the company's board of directors, led by Sidney Mussberger, to devise a scheme to profit from his demise. They appoint a naive newcomer, Norville Barnes, to run the company, anticipating that his incompetence will drive the stock price down, allowing them to buy it up at a bargain and regain control. However, a determined journalist, Amy Archer, begins to investigate Hudsucker Industries, threatening to expose the conspiracy.
