A Scotsman raises his two grandsons on a remote homestead in Nova Scotia after their father's death in the Boer War. The father's passing has created animosity towards all Dutch people, leading to a fight at school between one of the boys and the son of a Dutchman. The situation is complicated by the fact that the community doctor, a Dutchman, is secretly in love with the Scotsman's daughter. Meanwhile, the boys, forbidden from having a dog, take in an abandoned baby and care for it in a makeshift shelter.
