In mythical Japan, a tailor-turned-Lord High Executioner must find a victim to execute before the arrival of the ruling Mikado. He chooses a strolling minstrel who loves a beautiful woman, but she is also loved by the tailor. The minstrel considers suicide, but the tailor offers a solution: execute him and then allow him to marry the woman for a month before his execution. However, the minstrel is the son of the Mikado and has fled to avoid an arranged marriage to an older woman. The arrival of the Mikado brings the story to a close.
