A Catholic widow struggles with her devotion to her faith as she develops romantic feelings for a battle-hardened lieutenant colonel in the midst of World War II.

War widow Lee Ashley joins the American Red Cross in 1943, volunteering for the war in the Pacific to find her husband's grave. In Noumea, she meets nurse Kate Connors and falls in love with Lt. Col. Colin Black, who claims to have known her late husband. The affair leads to heartbreak and tragedy.
