Ambitious young truck driver Sam Starr is in love with Molly Betts, who shares her father's resentment towards the town's Mayor, John Scott Ryder. Ryder's success is due to his heroic act in WWI, which was actually performed by Molly's father. After Sam's truck is destroyed, he demands restitution from Ryder, who initially refuses. Ryder's reputation is threatened when Molly reveals she has evidence of his cowardice in the war. Ryder buys Sam a new truck, but a crooked politician, Al McGongile, blackmails Ryder, using Sam's business as leverage. As Sam's business flourishes, he learns the truth and leaves Molly. He confronts Ryder, who writes a confession and then kills himself. Ryder's wife destroys the note, and Sam is charged with murder, sparking a mob to gather around the jail intent on lynching him.
