In late 19th century Italy, a poor farm family faces a heartwarming dilemma. Their clever young son, once destined for farm labor, is instead sent to school, a costly sacrifice. Each day, he embarks on a long journey, only to return home with broken shoes, leaving his family without the means to replace them.
