The Weekend Sailor background

The Weekend Sailor

Mexican sailing prodigy Captain Ramon Carlin made a splash in the sailing world by dominating a grueling 9-month round-the-world regatta, surpassing even the most experienced professionals to claim the top spot.

The first Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race took place in 1973, pitting expert crews from Europe and other countries against each other. The British Royal Navy purchased six yachts to train 800 men, selecting the top four 10-man crews for each leg of the race. Meanwhile, an inexperienced Mexican man, Ramon Carlin, a weekend sailor in his 50s, also signed up with a crew including his wife, son, and friends. Despite being an underdog, Ramon surprisingly beat every competing nation.
