John Brown, a key figure in a high-profile jewel heist, turns state's evidence and is released from prison. A reporter, Simon Drake, tries to interview Brown but is rebuffed. After being fired for missing another assignment, Simon returns home and gets drunk. In a moment of jest, he calls his editor, Macgregor, to report Brown's murder, but Brown is actually killed later that night. When the police investigate, they find a recently fired gun in Simon's apartment and arrest him. Simon's wife and a garage mechanic provide an alibi, and he is released. However, the next morning, Brown's son is found murdered in Simon's apartment, and Macgregor is shot while in Simon's presence, leading the police to suspect Simon of being both the reporter and the mastermind behind the crimes.
