War and victory lead to a cycle of revenge. General Titus Andronicus returns to Rome with captives, including Queen Tamora and her sons. He sacrifices one of her sons to honor the Roman dead, but declines the imperial throne and crowns Saturninus, the elder son of the previous ruler. Saturninus marries Tamora, who plots revenge against Titus. The story unfolds with a chaotic mix of beheadings, rape, adultery, and cannibalism, ultimately ending with a twisted sense of irony as two sons manage to survive.
