Anne Crandall, the mayor of a small Vermont town, struggles to balance her duties with the challenges of raising her husband's daughter from his previous marriage. When a statue of her late husband is damaged in a thunderstorm, Anne is sent to New York to interview a prospective sculptor, George Corday. However, things take a complicated turn when Anne gets mistaken for a nightclub stripper and ends up in jail. As she tries to keep the scandal quiet, Corday shows up and moves into her garage to work on the statue, using the situation to blackmail her into accepting his advances.
