Gene Autry returns home from World War II to find a surprise gift from his friends - a race horse. However, the horse has been stolen from a neighboring rancher, Kit Barlow, and Gene sets out to find the thief. Along the way, he meets a horse trainer, his brother, and their eccentric friend, and helps the trainer's brother, Ted, regain his confidence as a jockey to ride in the Queen's Derby.
