In the Old Benbow Inn, a seaside haven, Mrs. Hawkins and her son Jim struggle to make ends meet. Captain Bill Bones warns Jim to beware of a one-legged seafarer, but before Jim can warn him, Black Dog, a ruthless sailor, arrives, demanding Bones' share of Captain Flint's treasure. When Bones is murdered, Jim and his mother flee, taking a small sum of money and a mysterious packet with them.
