Widowed Dr. Isak Borg, a former medical doctor and professor, embarks on a road trip to accept an honorary degree in Lund. He's accompanied by his daughter-in-law Marianne, who's returning home after a month-long stay. The journey is filled with stops and encounters that spark nostalgic reflections on his life, including visits to his childhood summer home, his mother's residence, and a gas station where he's praised for his work. Along the way, they meet people whose lives mirror his own, including hitchhikers and a bickering married couple, forcing him to confront his emotional isolation.
