Frankie McCoy, a small-time bookie from Sydney, is drafted into the Vietnam War and struggles with his relationship with his girlfriend Margie, who refuses to have sex with him before marriage. After deserting the army, Frankie returns to his old life, but his fortunes change for the worse. He commits a series of mistakes, including robbing an office and having an affair with a woman named Myra. When he discovers the stolen money is marked, he tries to retrieve it, but things escalate, and he accidentally kills Myra. In the end, Frankie is chased by his creditors and meets a tragic end by running in front of a moving car.
