A 70-year-old professor, Dominic Matei, is on the brink of suicide after the loss of his loved one and the inability to complete his life's work on the origins of language. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he is struck by lightning and begins to recover, only to discover that he is growing younger and gaining superhuman powers. As World War II breaks out, Dominic must escape to Switzerland to avoid being exploited by Nazi scientists who seek to use his abilities. Along the way, he meets a woman who has also been transformed by a lightning storm, and together they find love and a new purpose in life.
