Brendan Behan, a renowned Irish writer and IRA member, was born in North Dublin slums in 1923. He was arrested for smuggling explosives as a teenager and later served time in a juvenile detention center. Behan's life was marked by his struggles with alcoholism, and he was arrested numerous times for public drunkenness. Despite his success with the play "The Hostage," his addiction and erratic behavior led to him being shunned by friends and family. He died at age 41 in 1964 after collapsing at a Dublin bar.
