In the early 1920s, two British women, Adela Quested and Mrs. Moore, arrive in British India to visit Adela's fiancé, Ronny Heaslop, who works as a magistrate. They are dismayed to find that the British do not socialize with the native population and are determined to experience the real India. They meet a like-minded British man, Richard Fielding, who organizes a small social gathering with native guests, including a young physician, Aziz Ahmed. Aziz is eager to impress them by being more western and offers to take them on an outing to the Marabar Caves. However, something that happens at the caves threatens to destroy the fragile bridge between the British and Indian communities, putting Aziz and Adela's lives in danger.
