In the Edwardian era, a carefree family, the Honeychurches, live in Surrey. Lucy, a proper young lady, and her chaperone, Charlotte, travel to Florence, Italy for a week-long respite. They stay at the Pensione Bertolini, where they meet British tourists, including the Emersons. George Emerson, the son, is bright but brooding, and feels Italian life is opening his eyes to what's important. As their stay progresses, George and Lucy feel the same way. An incident occurs, and they leave Italy early. Lucy gets engaged to the upper-crust Cecil Vyse, but begins to question her choices.
