Harvard-educated actor Erwin VanDeever finds himself stranded in Buffalo Gap, Texas, after blowing his first big role. He's taken under the wing of a charismatic, almost-bankrupt oil driller named Merle Luskey, who sees Erwin as his chance to strike it rich. Together, they embark on a wild adventure to outsmart the bank, sheriff, and a corrupt oil company, racing against time to strike gold before Merle's dreams are crushed.
